One of my favorite books of all time is "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. Many of you have read it.
Hill wanted to see if wealthy people have common characteristics.

Twelve years ago I was fairly unhealthy, about 30 pounds overweight, sluggish and irritable. I was the director of an outpatient physical therapy clinic and had a lot of stress in my life.

Why are the Hips so important to this equation?
Good question! The Hips are the "intersection" of the body where gravity from above and ground reaction forces from below meet.

About 9 years ago, while running a physical therapy clinic, I came to the realization that there was not any carryover in terms of results with my patients. I would see people for similar injuries year after year in the clinic. They would always laugh it off as being accident prone or clumsy; but were they really? Was there something I could do to improve their chances of being injury-free?
I myself had been an athlete through high school and briefly at the college level. I had many recurring injuries and always "chalked it up" to different problems while playing sports. "This is an old shoulder injury or ankle injury from my playing days, I thought." Even with knowledge from my Physical Therapy degree and Strength and Conditioning Certification, I would link the problem to a past injury.
The bottom line is I could make my clients (and myself) feel better and alleviate just about any symptom orthopedically. But, it was a short-term fix.
It was the same with my fitness clients. I could help people lose weight. The help was usually for the short-term and may eventually cause them some orthopedic problems along the way. I would recommend hours of weight lifting, treadmill or other cardiovascular work and strict diets. They would work with me for a few months, and then go on their merry way; I would grin and think I was changing their lives.
I was changing their lives alright. In another 6 months they would show up with low back pain and were overweight again. They would say "I hurt my back, then quit doing the exercises you showed me; so IÔve gained all my weight again."
The exercises and exercise progressions were most likely causing the clients' new symptoms. Moreover, I was not changing their body mechanics to allow for fitness success.
Essentially, I was creating work for myself, yet not supporting any long-term gains with my clients.
I needed to teach them how to move their body correctly, in order to exercise efficiently.
I began studying and learning from the strength and conditioning "gurus" of the world; these included PhD's, professors, and trainers of college and pro athletes. Many of these experts became my friends and mentors, and still are to this day.
Now, I had (and still do) an innate skill of evaluating biomechanics/human movement. When I began to apply some of the principles these mentors were teaching me with my inherited talents, I became a much better practitioner.
I began by trying these principles on myself. I found I did not need to exercise for hours on end. I observed that by combining movement patterns and exercising in a logical progression I not only made greater fitness gains, but eliminated injuries. I became more energized, lost 20 pounds, found my 6-pack and gained a new outlook on life.
My clients were showing incredible gains as well. They were moving better, having fewer recurring injuries and reporting a new vigor for life. I saw them less often, but actually improved their quality of life.
How did I do this? What was the great secret?
I taught them fundamental movement principles and built upon them. I went by the adage "If I treat you, I can help you today, but, if I teach you, I can help you for a lifetime!"
I can summarize my secret in three points:
- You must use your butt to train your brain
- All muscles must be able to load prior to contracting or unloading
- You must train on your feet in 3 planes of motion
Once I began applying these three principles, then extrapolating upon them, a new world of fitness and its unlimited possibilities came shining through.

Let's Review:
Exercise routines on the market today are too isolated or uniplanar instead of multiplanar (involving all 3 planes of motion: forward and back "saggital", side to side "frontal", and twisting "transverse").
The short-term gains of these programs are diminished by the long-term muscle and joint pain users suffer and usually result in continued body weight struggle.
They are also time consuming and require a lot of equipment!
The brain and central nervous system recognize muscle synergies (groups of muscles working together) not individual muscles working independently on their own.
For the body to perform properly, and to achieve your fitness goals, one must train using synergies.
Isolating muscles when training will lead to muscle imbalances, muscle tightness, joint pain, overuse syndromes and poor posture.
With the other routines, you also lose the benefits of increased metabolism, energy levels, flexibility and strength... not to mention balance and coordination when training muscles in isolation.
Think about how we function in our daily lives, at work, and in athletic competition.
The body is a "linked" system using multiple joints in multiple planes of motion with multiple muscles working together to produce functional movement. For one part of the body to function properly, the other parts must function properly as well.
For example, if the ankle does not have adequate range of motion; the knees, hips, back, shoulders and neck may suffer.
You will see compensations, imbalances, muscle fatigue and joint pain all because one of the "links" in the chain is not functioning adequately.
